To model MS reliably to study pathogenesis and efficacy of possible chemicals, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) condition is induced in rodents. Ellagic acid is a neuroprotective polyphenol that can protect against demyelination. This study was planned and conducted to assess its possible beneficial effect in MOG-induced EAE model of MS with emphasis on uncovering its modes of action. Ellagic acid was given p.o. (at doses of 10 or 50 mg/kg/day) after development of clinical signs of MS to C57BL/6 mice immunized with MOG35-55. Results showed that ellagic acid can ameliorate severity of the disease and partially restore tissue level of TNFα, IL-6, IL-17A and IL-10. Besides, ellagic acid lowered tissue levels of NLRP3 and caspase 1 in addition to its mitigation of neuroinflammation, demyelination and axonal damage in spinal cord specimens of EAE group. As well, ellagic acid treatment prevented reduction of MBP and decreased GFAP and Iba1 immunoreactivity. Taken together, ellagic acid can decrease severity of EAE via amelioration of astrogliosis, astrocyte activation, demyelination, neuroinflammation and axonal damage that is partly related to its effects on NLRP3 inflammasome and pyroptotic pathway. To investigate the effect of fluoride and silver nanoparticles on the prevention of in vitro demineralization of sound enamel and enamel caries-like lesions of varying severities. Caries-like lesions of different severities (1/6/15 days) were created in bovine enamel specimens. One group remained sound. All specimens were demineralized again using a partially saturated acetic acid solution. Mimicking the intra-oral retention of fluoride and silver in vitro, this solution was supplemented with fluoride (0/1/10 ppm) and/or silver nanoparticles (0/10 ppm) in a factorial design. Changes in lesion depth (ΔL) and integrated mineral loss (ΔΔZ) were evaluated by digital transverse microradiography. Data was analyzed using three-way ANOVA. Lesion severity significantly affected ΔΔZ and ΔL, after no treatment and after the treatment of fluoride and silver independently (p = 0.012 and p = 0.037, respectively). Fluoride and the fluoride × lesion severity interaction were shown to be significant (p < 0.001) on ΔΔZ and ΔL. Silver nanoparticles significantly affected ΔΔZ (p = 0.041), but not ΔL (p = 0.15). The silver nanoparticles × lesion severity interaction was significant for ΔΔZ and ΔL (p = 0.032 and p = 0.024, respectively). No interaction was observed for ΔΔZ and ΔL between fluoride and silver (p = 0.962 and p = 0.971, respectively) as well as lesion severity and the use of fluoride and silver combined (p = 0.722 and p = 0.158, respectively). Fluoride and silver nanoparticles had a significant effect on the prevention of in vitro demineralization of sound enamel and enamel caries-like lesions of varying severities. In the present study, we investigated whether eye contact with a humanoid robot would elicit these responses. Participants were facing a humanoid robot (NAO) or a human partner, both physically present and looking at or away from the participant. The results showed that both in human-robot and human-human condition, eye contact versus averted gaze elicited greater skin conductance responses indexing autonomic arousal, greater facial zygomatic muscle responses (and smaller corrugator responses) associated with positive affect, and greater heart deceleration responses indexing attention allocation. With regard to the skin conductance and zygomatic responses, the human model's gaze direction had a greater effect on the responses as compared to the robot's gaze direction. In conclusion, eye contact elicits automatic affective and attentional reactions both when shared with a humanoid robot and with another human.One of the main problems with the treatment of metastatic prostate cancer is that, despite an initial positive response, the majority of patients develop resistance and progress.
